At the end of August, right after the holidays and just before the new school year started, CSC Danilo Dolci organized two final events as a conclusion of 3-years of 3MR project.
One took place in the library of booq at Palermo, together with trainer and expert Gabriele Mercadante, and a second one at the MAC museum in Gibellina, a town close to Palermo. The two events were a festive conclusion of the project, raising awareness until the last day about the importance of reading aloud for children in the pre-school age.
The 3MR project aims to increase the early literacy skills of children, especially those from culturally less advantaged backgrounds, by preparing professionals involved in early childhood education and parents to engage in reading aloud to children and in book-sharing practices. Therefore, the events were specially targeting ECEC professionals and parents, however they were of course also open to anyone else who was interested in the topic and wanted to know more about the importance of reading aloud. Eventually, the audience was composed of some old-participants and new faces, as well as a vast representation of public kindergartens from the Palermo and Gibellina area.
The event was a great opportunity to present the project, and to give extra attention to the recently developed toolkits for professionals and for parents. Extra time was therefore dedicated to their presentation. In Palermo, besides the presentation of the project and its results, there was also the time for a reading activity together. Children were also invited, and following the lead of Gabriele, all participants listened to the reading of quality picture book, with time to read through books and read together afterwards. Instead at Gibellina, the project was new to the teachers and parents, and therefore more time was dedicated to talking about books and how reading could be promoted in the future in Gibellina, as a library is supposed to open in the upcoming year.
Both events were concluded with aperitivo and a moment for the participants to get to know each other. Participants expressed their interests for the project and its results and once again it was shown how important reading is, and how much there is still to learn and read!
The 3MR project has reached its finish line. All outputs that have been produced in the last 3 years are online on the website www.readingmagic.eu and are free for download. These include a the 3MR-curriculum (IO1), Guidelines for the implementation of the 3MR methodology (IO2), a toolkit as a brochure and an online version for professionals (IO3) and a toolkit as a brochure and online version for parents (IO4).
