Resilience in basic education: a necessary building

The development and implementation of the outputs of RESET – Building resilience in basic education, the project funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, which aims to improve opportunities for adults with basic educational needs and provide them with lifelong learning as well as greater social inclusion, continues. On 7 May, the Centro per lo Sviluppo Creativo Danilo Dolci met the other partners in the now usual online mode. RESET revolves around a well-known but often abstract concept, that of resilience, here conceived as a positive reaction to adverse experiences.

The CSC and the other three participating organizations started this second Transnational Project Meeting by taking stock of the first of the expected results, which is now being finalized. It is a methodology with highly innovative educational practices that basic educators will adopt to help adults strengthening their resilience and use it productively to meet challenges.

Two outputs that will follow in the coming months were discussed: a curriculum based on storytelling and a toolbox with various resilience exercises. The first will consist of a course for both adult educators and adults themselves. Starting from stories that promote resilience, this training will also strengthen basic educational skills such as numeracy, digital, literacy, civic education, etc.

The toolbox will instead propose 80 exercises and games with different levels of difficulty, and all connected with one or more basic educational skills. Through playful pedagogy, participants will learn creativity and how to express their ideas.

To be deepened in the next meetings, will be the preparation of the fourth and last result of the project: a digital platform, designed for the same two types of users, with recordings of stories to listen to in class and quizzes on listening comprehension and digital skills.

RESET sets these objectives in a Europe where adult classes are formed by many participants with stories of war, escape or violence behind them. The resulting trauma, stress and chronic illnesses have serious repercussions on their ability to learn and concentrate. In order to avoid their consequent exclusion and marginalization, the project partners decided to bet on psychological stability, creativity and expansion of their scope of actions as promoters of autonomy and social participation.
