Digital skills are key to meeting the challenges of the future, but awareness of their potential is often lacking in rural areas. At the same time, to improve the digital and soft skills of those working in rural areas, it is important to first identify the needs of the community, and then structure educational solutions that can respond to them.
This was the focus of the second meeting with the OUR DIGITAL VILLAGE partnership which took place in Palermo hosted by the Center for Creative Development “Danilo Dolci” on 17th and 18th October 2023, followed by a training for ICT experts on digital technologies in the following days at the Fablab headquarters in Palermo.
During the meeting, the activities that will be put into practice in Italy, Portugal, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Austria and Poland in the upcoming months were discussed. After having identified the needs of rural communities through self-analysis workshops with teachers, students and adult learners, a process of co-creation of educational materials useful for the development of digital and transversal skills in the rural areas of each country is about to be launched. These materials will include practical ICT activities and pedagogical guidelines to support the implementation of such activities in educational contexts.
For this reason, during the meeting in Palermo, the Center for Creative Development “Danilo Dolci” and the “Fablab Palermo” trained their partners on digital technologies such as Web Development, Robotics, 3D Printing, Microcontrollers and Coding, in order to learn how apply these technologies in practice, how to use them to create educational activities and why it is important to have also non-technical skills. Thanks to the training, the experts will now be able to put into practice the notions learned in their countries of origin to strengthen the co-creation process which in the coming months will lead to the creation of a Toolkit of Activities aimed at development of digital and transversal skills in rural areas. This tool will be used once ready to implement training courses for teachers, adults and school learners in rural areas.
