Intergenerational training was one of the key aspects in Work Together. In partnership with Romania and Latvia, the project promoted and enabled international volunteering for 4 seniors over 60 from each country. The participants had opportunities to participate in 12 days of activities in the host country in educational facilities such as kindergartens, primary schools and centres for adults with disabilities and to promote intergenerational activities.

Two of the volunteers from Palermo had opportunity to participate in the international volunteering activities in Latvia between 11 to 22 September, and other two in Romania from 26 September to 7 October 2022. The mobilities were organised to promote the development and establishment of international intergenerational education in partner organisations.

Thanks to the experiences, the participants had the opportunity to learn different cultures from other countries and to share their own culture with them while taking an active part in the volunteering activities, and to get to know the country of arrival, through organised visits and social moments.

In the last phase of the mobility, CSC Danilo Dolci hosted two participants from Latvia and two from Romania in Palermo between 19 to 30 October 2022. The volunteers took part in different activities in the kindergartens of the city centre, which are rich in multiculturalism, as well as in schools distributed throughout the area, immersed and surrounded by nature. They also took part in activities in different centres for adults with psychological distress, always putting humanity and empathy at the centre of every moment.

The volunteers supported the professionals in each sector with great enthusiasm and spirit of adaptation, suggesting games and activities suited to the target group, participating in gardening activities with children, managing the activities with innovation and a desire to participate despite the language barrier, with great respect for the professionals with whom they met.

Although the international mobilities have come to an end, new activities for the inclusion of seniors in children's educational institutions at local level are planned for the coming months, which will enable the implementation of the activities tested so far thanks to the exchange and participation of volunteers.

If you are living in Palermo and you would like to participate in the educational activities with children in local kindergartens that will be organised from the beginning of December 2022 please contact Bala Ram Gaire: balaram.gaire@danilodolci.org.
