Social Media

Equip young communicators and youth workers to create ethical, accurate content by using AI tools to detect misinformation, training in visual communication, and promoting ethical journalism for inclusive and responsible discourse.

Description of the project

Migration is one of the most critical global challenges involving millions of people worldwide. According to the IOM, there are more than 280 million migrants worldwide, with Europe and Turkey hosting almost a third of them. The number of refugees in European countries increased from 12.4 million at the end of 2022 to 13 million by the end of 2023. As migration reshapes societies, the need for ethical, accurate and effective communication is more urgent than ever. The media plays a decisive role in determining public attitudes. Studies highlight negative portrayals and rising disinformation, especially on social media.

The project aims to equip young communicators with media literacy, fact-checking skills, and AI tools to detect false narratives. It aims to train them to address migration issues with empathy and accuracy, promoting inclusive discourse to ensure an ethical, informed future for migration communication across Europe.

Objectives

  • Equip young communicators with the knowledge and skills needed to produce accurate, ethical, and effective content on migration.
  • Improve young communicators with digital literacy skills related to migration and enable them to combat disinformation using AI-supported tools.
  • Increase the knowledge and skills of youth workers on migration communication and media representations, enabling them to conduct more effective activities with young people to raise their awareness about migration.
  • Enable young communicators to produce inclusive and positive narratives about migration on media platforms and increase public awareness to reduce prejudices against migrants in society and strengthen social cohesion.
  • Foster effective collaboration among young people, youth workers, academic institutions, media organisations, governmental bodies, and NGOs on migration communication and combating misinformation.

Activities

  • Create a series of at least 15 podcasts focused on improving understanding of migration communication, ethical reporting and countering disinformation.
  • Conduct surveys and interviews with youth workers and communicators to assess their satisfaction with the podcast creation process and the knowledge they gained.
  • Provide practical, hands-on training to youth workers and communicators on creating podcast on migration as a thematic focus by using AI.
  • Create media contents and awareness campaigns for public awareness about migration decrease prejudices to strengthen social cohesion.
  • Organisation of workshops at local levels and including one in Vienna, Austria on artificial intelligence, migration communication, ethical communication methods, disinformation, ethnic media techniques to provide participants with skills in migration communication and the use of artificial intelligence.
  • Organise photographs/videos exhibition with selection of 25 ethical photographs or videos that represent migration stories. The exhibition aims to engage the public in both digital and physical formats to raise awareness about migration related issues and disinformation.
