The free LIGHT training course begins: together against invisible racism

Mar 31, 2025News

In today’s society, racism does not always present itself in direct or easily recognizable ways. It often hides in the details, in unspoken words, in unconscious gestures. This is where invisible racism and unconscious bias influence our relationships and decisions, even in seemingly ordinary situations. The LIGHT project was created to shed light on these subtle yet powerful dynamics, and to provide concrete tools to those working with young people to challenge them.

LIGHT offers a completely free training program designed for youth workers, aimed at strengthening their ability to recognize and address these forms of discrimination. The goal is to promote more inclusive youth work, capable of addressing the cultural and social challenges of our time, and to spread non-formal learning methods that are still not widely known.

The training course, starting on May 5th with a hybrid launch event, is structured in three phases:

  • A preparatory introductory session, to open a first space for dialogue and introduce the topic. It will be held at the Centro per lo Sviluppo Creativo Danilo Dolci – ETS, in Palermo (via Roma 94). The session will be hybrid, so you can also join remotely!
  • A one-month MOOC, which can be followed flexibly at your own pace. You will be able to access the platform and follow the lessons whenever it suits you.
  • A final follow-up session, focused on evaluating the learning outcomes and co-designing concrete youth activities together with the participants.

What will you find in the online course?

The course consists of five thematic modules that explore invisible racism and unconscious bias from different perspectives — from theoretical understanding to non-formal education methodologies, including creative approaches such as Theatre of the Oppressed and storytelling. One full section is dedicated to the practical application of the tools developed within the project. At the end of the course, each participant will receive a digital badge, which can also be added to their professional portfolio.

This training is not only a chance for personal and professional growth — it is an invitation to take responsibility for building fairer educational relationships, more inclusive learning environments, and a more equitable society. It is a small but concrete step toward becoming agents of change.

No prior skills are required. Whether you work in a youth center, an association, formal or informal educational projects, or as a volunteer, this course will help you see the invisible — and act.
